How to transfer credit card points to Finnair Plus Avios

Finnair Plus is Finnair's program, and it uses Avios. Award prices follow a zone chart with no peak and off-peak dates, so Finnair business class to Helsinki and on to Europe or Asia is easy to price. Business class between Helsinki and North America is about 62,500 Avios one-way.

Capital One and Rove transfer straight to Finnair Plus. The other banks get there in two steps.

Which bank points transfer to Finnair

Amex, Chase, Bilt, Wells Fargo and Citi. These don't transfer to Finnair directly. You can send Amex, Chase, Bilt or Wells Fargo points to British Airways and then move the Avios to Finnair Plus with Combine My Avios. Citi works the same way through Qatar Airways. Finnair has its own rules for linking accounts (for example, adults only and a minimum account age), so set that up early.

Banks sometimes run transfer bonuses to Finnair. Check the transfer screen on the day you move points.

Before you move any points

Open a free Finnair Plus account at finnair.com if you don't have one. Your membership number is in your profile.
Make the names match on your bank account, Finnair Plus account and passport.
Find the flight first. Search finnair.com with Avios, note the price and the carrier charges. Transfers can't be undone.
Check whether your flight books online. Some partner flights, such as American or Alaska, can only be booked by calling Finnair.

How to transfer from each bank

Capital One. Sign in, open your rewards, and choose the option to transfer your miles, then Finnair. Your Capital One name has to match the Finnair Plus account. The minimum is 1,000 miles.

Rove. Sign in at rove.com or in the Rove app, tap your profile icon, then Transfer Miles, and choose Finnair Plus. Your Finnair Plus account has to exist already, and its name and number must match your Rove account. Check the ratio and any minimum on screen before you confirm. Rove says most transfers finish within a day, but some take up to 20 days. Rove transfers can't be cancelled.

Check that the Avios arrived

Log in at finnair.com or in the Finnair app and check the Avios balance in your Finnair Plus profile. If nothing shows after the usual time, check your bank's transfer history for the number and name you used. Don't send a second transfer.

How to book the award on finnair.com

Sign in to Finnair Plus at finnair.com or in the app.
Start a flight search and choose the option to use Avios.
Enter your airports, dates, cabin and travelers, and search.
Pick your flights and check the operating airline and cabin on every leg.
Enter each traveler's name, date of birth and gender exactly as on their passport.
Pay the taxes, fees and carrier charges by card.
Save the booking reference.

Finnair-only awards don't allow stopovers. For partner flights that don't show online, call Finnair with the exact flights.

The fees to know

Carrier charges: Finnair adds roughly €10 to €120 each way, depending on the route.
Phone bookings: about €30. Booking online is free.
Changes and cancellations: about €50 per ticket.

Partner awards booked by phone are harder to change. Treat them as firm plans.

Do Finnair Avios expire?

Not if you collect or use Avios at least once every 18 months. Finnair says moving Avios between accounts, or between Finnair Plus and another Avios program, doesn't count as activity. Check the expiry date in the Finnair app or your Finnair Plus account.

Mistakes I see most

Transferring for a partner flight before a Finnair agent confirms the seat.
Forgetting the 18-month rule if you don't fly Finnair often.
Expecting a Combine My Avios move to reset the expiry clock. It doesn't.
