How to transfer credit card points to Emirates Skywards

Last updated October 20, 2026 · By Kyle Burrows

Skywards is Emirates' program. Most people use it for Emirates flights through Dubai, in business or economy.

Four US banks transfer to it, but only one does it at 1:1. The others give you fewer miles per point, so which bank you use makes a real difference here. Emirates awards also come with cash charges on top of the miles, so look at the full price before you move anything.

Which bank points transfer to Emirates

Bank pointsRatioHow long it takes
Bilt Points1:1Usually instant. Bilt says allow up to 48 hours.
American Express Membership Rewards1,000 to 800Usually instant
Citi ThankYou1,000 to 800 on some cards, 1,000 to 560 on others (see below)Usually quick
Capital One Miles1,000 to 750Often quick, but Emirates says it can take several working days.

Chase and Wells Fargo don't transfer to Emirates.

Citi cards. Emirates is one of Citi's weaker partners. The Citi Strata Premier, Strata Elite and Prestige get 1,000 to 800. Most other Citi cards get 1,000 to 560, so combine your points in one ThankYou account with a full-ratio card first if you have one.

Banks sometimes run transfer bonuses to Emirates. Check the transfer screen on the day you move points.

Before you move any points

  • Open a free Skywards account at emirates.com if you don't have one. Your Skywards number is in your profile.
  • Make the names match on your bank account, Skywards account and passport.
  • Find the flight first. Search emirates.com while logged in and price the whole trip before you transfer. Transfers can't be undone.
  • Work out how many bank points you need. At 1,000 to 800, an award priced at 100,000 miles takes 125,000 bank points. Do the sum before you transfer, not after.
  • Look at the cash part. Emirates adds carrier charges as well as taxes, so the cash part can be much higher than you'd pay on many other programs.

How to transfer from each bank

Bilt. In the app, go to Rewards, then Travel rewards, and tap Transfer. Choose Emirates Skywards and link your number. Blue status members have a 2,000-point minimum.

American Express. Log in at americanexpress.com, open Membership Rewards and choose Transfer Points, then Emirates Skywards. The first time, link your Skywards number and confirm with your card's security code or a one-time code. Amex only sends points to your own account, or to an authorized user who has had their card for at least 90 days. New Amex card? Each new US Membership Rewards card can start with its own separate points balance. Before you transfer, and before you cancel that card, link it to your main account under Manage Connections on the Amex website or app, so all your points sit in one balance.

Citi. Sign in at thankyou.com, find Points Transfer (it has been under More Ways to Redeem), and choose Emirates Skywards. Transfers start at 1,000 points.

Capital One. Sign in, open your rewards, and choose the option to transfer your miles, then Emirates Skywards. Your Capital One name has to match the Skywards account. The minimum is 1,000 miles, which becomes 750 Skywards Miles.

Check that the miles arrived

Log in at emirates.com and check the miles balance in your Skywards account. If nothing shows after the usual time, check your bank's transfer history for the number and name you used. Don't send a second transfer.

How to book the award on emirates.com

  1. Log in at emirates.com.
  2. Start a flight search and choose to pay with Skywards Miles. Emirates calls these Classic Rewards.
  3. Enter your airports, dates, cabin and travelers.
  4. Pick your flights. Emirates sells award seats as Saver or Flex Plus. Saver costs fewer miles and has stricter rules.
  5. Check the cabin on every leg. A business class trip can include an economy flight.
  6. Enter each traveler's name, date of birth and gender exactly as on the passport.
  7. Read the cash total, then pay the taxes and charges by card.
  8. Save the booking reference and ticket number.

Emirates opens award seats up to about 11 months before departure. Awards on most of Emirates' partner airlines aren't booked like this. Emirates asks you to send a request through its online reward form or contact its call center, and says confirmation can take up to seven working days. Don't transfer for a partner award until Emirates has confirmed the seat.

Changes and cancellations

  • Saver. One free date change, then $25 for each change after that. A refund of the miles before travel costs $75.
  • Flex Plus. Changes and refunds before travel are free.
  • Once you've started travelling, the unused part isn't refunded.
  • Expiry still counts. If miles on a cancelled ticket have expired, they don't come back.

Do Skywards Miles expire?

Yes. Skywards Miles are valid for three years, and they expire in batches at the end of your birth month in the year they're due. Your account shows the dates. Emirates sells extensions, but it's simpler to transfer only when you're ready to book.

Mistakes I see most

  • Transferring from a weaker-ratio bank when Bilt points were available.
  • Forgetting the cash part when comparing Emirates with Qatar Airways or other programs.
  • Booking Saver when plans aren't firm. Flex Plus costs more miles but gives you a way out.
