How to transfer credit card points to Qantas Frequent Flyer
Last updated October 20, 2026 · By Kyle Burrows
Qantas Frequent Flyer is the program of Qantas, Australia's largest airline. You can use the points on Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld airlines such as American, JAL and Cathay Pacific, and other partners.
Three US banks transfer to it. It's a useful program to know about, but it's rarely the first one I'd check from the US: the cash part of a Qantas award can be high, because Qantas adds carrier charges on many flights. Price the whole thing, including the cash, before you commit.
Which bank points transfer to Qantas
| Bank points | Ratio | How long it takes |
|---|---|---|
| American Express Membership Rewards | 1:1 | Usually instant |
| Capital One Miles | 1:1 | Often about a day |
| Citi ThankYou | 1:1 on some cards, 1,000 to 700 on others (see below) | Often within a day, but it can take a few business days. |
Chase, Bilt and Wells Fargo don't transfer to Qantas.
Citi cards. The Citi Strata Premier, Strata Elite, Prestige and AT&T Access More transfer to Qantas at 1:1. Most other Citi cards get 1,000 to 700, so combine your points in one ThankYou account with a full-ratio card first if you have one.
Banks sometimes run transfer bonuses to Qantas. Check the transfer screen on the day you move points.
Before you move any points
- Open a Qantas Frequent Flyer account at qantas.com if you don't have one. Qantas says a joining fee may apply, so check before you pay anything. Your membership number is in your profile.
- Make the names match on your bank account, Qantas account and passport.
- Check who can fly. Qantas's terms say Flight Rewards are only for members and their eligible family members. That covers a wide circle, from spouses, parents and children to in-laws, aunts, uncles and first cousins, and Qantas may ask for proof of the relationship.
- Find the flight first. Search qantas.com while logged in and price the whole trip, including the cash part, before you transfer. Transfers can't be undone.
- Compare the cash part. The same flight booked with American, Alaska or another oneworld program can come with lower charges. It's worth a few minutes to check.
How to transfer from each bank
American Express. Log in at americanexpress.com, open Membership Rewards and choose Transfer Points, then Qantas Frequent Flyer. The first time, link your Qantas number and confirm with your card's security code or a one-time code. Amex only sends points to your own account, or to an authorized user who has had their card for at least 90 days. New Amex card? Each new US Membership Rewards card can start with its own separate points balance. Before you transfer, and before you cancel that card, link it to your main account under Manage Connections on the Amex website or app, so all your points sit in one balance.
Capital One. Sign in, open your rewards, and choose the option to transfer your miles, then Qantas Frequent Flyer. Your Capital One name has to match the Qantas account. The minimum is 1,000 miles.
Citi. Sign in at thankyou.com, find Points Transfer (it has been under More Ways to Redeem), and choose Qantas Frequent Flyer. Transfers start at 1,000 points.
Check that the points arrived
Log in at qantas.com and check the points balance in your Frequent Flyer account. If nothing shows after the usual time, check your bank's transfer history for the number and name you used. Don't send a second transfer.
How to book the award on qantas.com
- Log in at qantas.com.
- Search your airports and dates, and switch the results to Rewards.
- Look for flights with the red Reward ribbon. Those are Classic Flight Rewards, which have a fixed points price.
- Qantas also sells Classic Plus reward seats, which usually cost more points. Make sure you've picked the one you meant.
- Check the cabin and the operating airline on every leg.
- Enter each traveler's name, date of birth and gender exactly as on the passport.
- Read the cash total, then pay the taxes, fees and carrier charges by card.
- Save the booking reference and ticket number.
Changes and cancellations
- Before ticketing, you can change a Classic Flight Reward without a change fee.
- After ticketing, Qantas charges a change fee per passenger. It has been 5,000 points.
- To cancel before travel and get the points back, you pay a cancellation fee. It has been 6,000 points per passenger.
- Once you've started travelling, nothing is put back on the unused part.
- No-show. If you miss a flight without cancelling, you lose that flight, and Qantas cancels the rest of the trip.
Qantas lists the current amounts in its fee schedule. Check them before you book if there's any chance your plans will change.
Do Qantas points expire?
Your points stay valid as long as your account is active. They all expire if you go 18 months in a row without earning or using any points. If you transfer points for a trip and book it, you're fine.
Mistakes I see most
- Looking only at the points and not at the cash charges.
- Booking Classic Plus by accident when a Classic Flight Reward was available.
- Not comparing with American, Alaska or another oneworld program for the same flight.
