How to transfer credit card points to Iberia Avios
Last updated October 20, 2026 · By Kyle Burrows
Iberia Club is Iberia's program (you'll still see its old name, Iberia Plus, on some bank sites). Like British Airways, it uses Avios. You can spend them on Iberia, on Vueling and Level, and on some oneworld partner flights.
Most people come to Iberia for its own flights between the US and Madrid. If you're mainly after BA or American flights, start with the British Airways guide (here) and come back if Iberia prices the trip better.
Which bank points transfer to Iberia
| Bank points | Ratio | How long it takes |
|---|---|---|
| American Express Membership Rewards | 1:1 | Often within a day. Can take up to 2 days. |
| Chase Ultimate Rewards | 1:1 | Most by the next business day. Chase says up to 7 business days. |
| Bilt Points | 1:1 | Usually instant. Bilt says allow up to 48 hours. |
| Wells Fargo Rewards | 1:1 (points cards such as Autograph and Autograph Journey) | Can take a little time to post |
Capital One and Citi don't transfer to Iberia directly. Capital One can reach Iberia via British Airways, and Citi via Qatar Airways.
Banks sometimes run transfer bonuses to Iberia. Check the transfer screen on the day you move points.
Before you move any points
- Open a free Iberia Club account at iberia.com if you don't have one. Your card number is in your account.
- Make the names match on your bank account, Iberia account and passport.
- Find the flight first. Search iberia.com while logged in and confirm the seats, the Avios price and the cash part before you transfer. Transfers can't be undone.
- Add the people you book for. Iberia lets you name beneficiaries, under Frequent companions in your profile, who can use your Avios without you flying with them.
- Think about a Family Account if you travel as a household. Iberia lets 2 to 7 people pool their Avios. Anyone who joins has to stay in for at least 12 months, so read the rules first.
How to transfer from each bank
American Express. Log in at americanexpress.com, open Membership Rewards and choose Transfer Points, then Iberia. The first time, link your Iberia number and confirm with your card's security code or a one-time code. Amex only sends points to your own account, or to an authorized user who has had their card for at least 90 days. New Amex card? Each new US Membership Rewards card can start with its own separate points balance. Before you transfer, and before you cancel that card, link it to your main account under Manage Connections on the Amex website or app, so all your points sit in one balance.
Chase. Open Ultimate Rewards on a Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve or Ink Business Preferred, find the option to transfer points to travel partners (Chase has moved this menu around, so look for the word Transfer), and pick Iberia Club. Transfers go in 1,000-point blocks.
Bilt. In the app, go to Rewards, then Travel rewards, and tap Transfer. Choose Iberia (Bilt still lists it as Iberia Plus) and link your number. Blue status members have a 2,000-point minimum.
Wells Fargo. Transfers work from Wells Fargo cards that earn Rewards points, such as the Autograph and Autograph Journey. Sign in online, go to your rewards and look for Rewards Points Transfer. You can transfer any amount.
Check that the Avios arrived
Log in at iberia.com and check the Avios balance in your account. If nothing shows after the usual time, check your bank's transfer history for the number and name you used. Don't send a second transfer.
How to book on iberia.com
- Log in at iberia.com.
- Enter your route and dates, then choose the option to Pay with Avios.
- Pick your flights and the fare.
- Check the cabin and the operating airline on every leg.
- Enter each traveler's name, date of birth and gender exactly as on the passport.
- Pay the taxes and fees by card.
- Save the booking reference and ticket number.
Iberia awards include a cash part for taxes and carrier fees. Look at the full cash total before you transfer, and compare it with the same flight on BA.
Moving Avios between Iberia and British Airways
Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Qatar Airways all use Avios. In your Iberia account, under Manage Avios, you can transfer Avios to other programme accounts, which is useful when another program prices a flight better. There are account rules for these moves, so check what your account allows before you transfer bank points with a move in mind.
Changes and cancellations
The rules depend on the fare you booked. For Avios awards on flights operated by Iberia:
- Basic: changes cost €25 (or $40) per person. No refunds.
- Economy Comfort: changes are free. You can cancel and get your Avios back up to 24 hours before the flight for €25 (or $40).
- Premium Economy and Business Comfort: changes and refunds up to 24 hours before the flight, for €25 (or $40).
Awards on other airlines, including oneworld partners, follow the fare's own rules, so check them before you pay. Vueling awards can't be changed or refunded.
Iberia handles award changes and refunds through its Iberia Club Service Centre.
If you might need to cancel, don't book Basic.
Do Iberia Avios expire?
Your Avios stay active as long as your account shows at least one transaction, Avios collected or used, every 36 months. Iberia says transferring Avios, in or out, doesn't count as a transaction. It doesn't say clearly whether points arriving from your bank count, so don't rely on a bank transfer either. The safe way to keep the account alive is to earn Avios on a flight or partner, or to book an award.
Mistakes I see most
- Booking a Basic award for a trip that might change, then finding it can't be refunded.
- Cancelling too late. On Iberia's own flights, refunds have to be made at least 24 hours before departure.
- Counting on transfers to keep the account active. Iberia doesn't count Avios transfers, and a bank transfer may not count either.
- Transferring before checking the cash part. Compare it with BA for the same flight.
